high school reunion

In 2012 I have been invited to a record EIGHT weddings. Sadly this coupled with the two weeks of unexpected medical leave I had to take at the beginning of the year, means I can't attend even close to all of the celebrations I'd like to. I am lucky to know so many wonderful, lovable human beings. I wish I could be there to share in all of their days. Sadly it cannot be. But last month my best friend from high school got herself good and hitched. Highlights included dancing my face off, surreptitiously turning off the lights in the venue, and seeing & hugging & remembering how much I dearly love my friends from high school. We're scattered across the country now, and have all grown up a lot, but I miss them all the time. I tried to shoot some stuff without a flash (in those lights I turned off) using 3200 film. The results were...educational! 13790028 13790003 13790006 13790026 13790027 13790015 13790005 13790001 13790008 13790002 13790021 13790022

fringe shoot

There's something electric about actors. Never you mind that it is the chosen profession of some of my best friends as well as some of my favorite people of all time. I'm not biased. I'm just informed. I am so unbelievably drawn to performers, doing what they do. And so I never turn down an opportunity to shoot theatre (this may also explain my serious Netflix habit). I hung out with the gang from Triptych Productions a couple weeks ago and photographed final dress of their offering for this year's Capital Fringe Festival, The Confines of Flattery. triptych-44 triptych-39 triptych-57 triptych-69 triptych-67 triptych-29 triptych-22 triptych-33 triptych-2 Support local theatre!

a year in film

I had the same roll of film in my camera from September 2011 to June 2012. I can't really explain it There was a time when I carried my old-school Canon with my everywhere, but things have changed. I've learned to really use my DSLR, was expected in photography school to shoot only digital, and, well, with the advent of instagram my iPhone has for sure become my on-the-go camera of choice. It's a sad state of affairs, folks. Here are a smattering of the not-too-terrible ones from the last roll of color I shot. I'm a fan of some of these of my mom in the weeks and months after her stroke and brain surgery, though I'm sure she'll hate them. Too bad, Momma! 13780003 13780001 13780006 13780009 13780012 13780011 13780014 13780016 13780028 13780029 13780030 13780032 13780020 13780022 13780019 13780023 13780018 13780033 13780036 13780034

stills don't sing

A little inspiration for photographers everywhere to learn to use their dslr video feature. Stills don't sing, man.

In the Open #1.3: Young the Giant - Apartment from In the Open on Vimeo.

Young the Giant, filmed by Alexander Shahmiri. I recommend taking a look at all their "Open Sessions." Though, this band is shot especially beautifully.

a Maine love story

Have I ever mentioned what a big crush I have on Maine?
I mean, I know this seems a little forward since we don't actually know each other very well.  We haven't spent more than six weeks at a time together, but, you really seem to get me. Exploring your summer lakes and fields and winding roads is an amazing way to spend a day.  I find your downtown cobblestones really attractive, and the ocean views are exactly what I'm looking for.  In a state.  No other puts me at ease the way you do.

So, this may be a little forward, but I'd like to spend more time together.  I know we are sort of far away from one another and that you have to stay where you are at the moment, but, and I don't say this lightly: I could come to you?  If you'd like?  I've started running and would like to get more into outdoor sports - so I'm getting ready for whatever you can throw at me.  And have I mentioned that I make a mean zucchini loaf?

We can take it slow at first, but just say the word, Maine, and I'll hop on a plane to be with you.

Enough of that.  'Cause, guys, Sean and Maya got married! In Maine! (Obviously.)  I was merely a guest at this beautiful wedding outside Portland, but managed to get a couple of shots in.  The trip up from DC was just what the doctor ordered and I couldn't have been more thrilled to reunite with so many sweet and wonderful folks from college and my first few years in Washington, DC.  It was an especially lovely event and I was so happy to be there.  I am feeling so much love in my heart this week.
